Message: Good to be in this tournament :) Enjoying my teamgames at the moment as well.
Interesting statistic though, out of my 20 completed games for the Cynics, with 11 wins, 6 of those wins have been due to 3 opponents timing out in both games! On my recollection all three opponents were pretty tough too with highish ratings and not many losses. A win is a win for the team though!

My son Dan, known as "Umpito," has lost his posting and messaging privileges for some unknown reason. It may be because he's not a paid member and is sharing computers (but not e-mail addresses) with me and my other son (Pumperstein), who are paid members. This seems unfair, and I'm going to message the site authorities about it. In the mean time, if you're not hearing from him, it's not because he doesn't like you!

Message: Hello team,
I am looking for matches all the time, this month we started 9 new teammatches so I'm able to get us an average of 1 match every 3 days. You guys play so fast that you finish the matches faster than I can start new ones. I hope to get some responses for new matches in the next couple of days. The problem is that I'm only allowed to send 3 challenges at a time.
And indeed, we once had a score of -15 (and we were on place 150 or so) and now we have a score of +57 and we are on place 40! We are doing a great job as a team at this moment indeed.
It would be nice if more people would post in our forum. I hope that raylopez is able to explain to the webmaster about the status of umpito. I'm not able to use him anymore for teamgames at all.
I hope more teammembers will post here.

Message: ... for February:
As White, lost to Pavleto of "For USSR" in a 2c3 Sicilian. Fortunately we're well ahead of them in the match. I'm getting disillusioned with this 2 c3 opening, though.
Then I swept my games in our matches with Finland and the Global Bounty Hunters. We've clinched a win against the Bounty Hunters, and we should win the Finland match too as we're four games up.
I beat Jouni of Finland as Black in an odd closed Sicilian -- he was in trouble after recapturing on f6 with his g-pawn -- and as White in a Philidor. Why does anybody play that defense? I was up a pawn when he let my bishop skewer his queen and king.
As Black, I beat Control-reset of the Bounty Hunters in a Scotch Game. I got a queenside passed pawn on the 15th move and that was it. As White, I beat her with a knight fork on a6. She wasn't paying attention . . . but by opening with Steinitz defense to Ruy Lopez (3..d6) she already gave me the advantage -- especially when she played 4..a6. I've seen this more than once: If you're going to play this move in conjunction with the Steinitz, it only makes sense to play it on the third move, and *then* 4. ...d6. White frequently exchanges his B anyway on the 5th move (a typical sequence is 1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 Bb5 a6 4 Ba4 d6 5 Bxc6 bxc6 6 d4 -- once Black plays d6, White decides to exchange the B in order to force ..exd4 -- otherwise Black is saddled with doubled isolated pawns after White exchanges pawns on e5), so playing ..a6 *after* ..d6 just lets White skip the move 4 Ba4 in the above sequence. Black wastes a whole move.
Let's keep on kicking *ss!

3/02/2004 08:26:58 play online chess | Openings jargon
Message: Omus,
I'm afraid I'm coming across as pompous. I'm just very interested in chess lore, including openings. Chess is such a silent, solitary activity that I feel anything that gives us something to talk about has to be a good thing!
For the record: the Sicilian Defense is when Black replies to 1 e4 with 1 c5. Among chess masters it's the most popular opening for Black. About 75% of the time in the Sicilian there is an exchange of pawns on d4 after White plays d4. That's an "open" Sicilian. When White doesn't play d4 it's a "closed" Sicilian.
As for the other "plays," the Ruy Lopez, also called the Spanish game, occurs after 1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nc6 when White plays 3 Bb5. The Steinitz defense to the Ruy is when Black replies 3 ..d6. The Scotch Game is an alternative to the Ruy in which White plays 3 d4 instead of 3 Bb5. The Philidor Defense occurs after 1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 when Black replies 2...d6 instead of the usual 2...Nc6.
I have a very high percentage of wins as White against the Philidor and against the Steinitz defense to the Ruy. In these defenses Black is almost always restricted to a passive "fortress" position and gets very little counterplay. That's why I can't understand why anybody plays these defenses. On the other hand (I shouldn't be saying this in public, I guess) I have a very poor record against the Petroff Defense, in which, after 1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Black replies 2..Nf6.

Message: I just approved liebling to our team. Let's hope he enjoys playing all his team games. Let's hope he is NOT a liebling for his opponents and win some teammatches. For the players who do not talk over the border, liebling is a german word that means something like darling, sweetheart :-)
We also have a problem. The other son of raylopez (umpito is his son and already playing for our team), pumperstein applied to join our team. For me I have no problem to approve him as a team member but some time ago I read somewhere (I can't find it anymore) that it's not allowed to have 3 or more players from the same computer in one team. All 3 (raylopez, umpito and pumperstein) are paying members so perhaps then it is allowed but I want to know this for sure before I will approve. I don't want to bring our team in big problems if we do something that is not allowed. Perhaps some of you can find this rule somewhere and help me out with this problem. Perhaps raylopez and pumperstein (both) can send a message to the webmaster to ask if it is allowed.
I hope to hear from you all very soon about this problem. Until I know for sure if it is allowed I will wait with approving pumperstein to our team.
Enjoy all your matches

Message: Paul,
Q16 on the FAQ is: "It doesn't let me start new games because I have too many accounts on my computer. What can I do?"
The answer is: "Unfortunately, the only way to avoid this limitation is to become a paying subscriber. The reason for this is because multiple accounts can be created by the same person . . . Unfortunately the only reliable way to verify uniqueness of an account is the paid subscription. It greatly reduces the risk of someone creating several accounts for themselves."
So I feel certain we're OK now that we've bought three subscriptions!
