Thanks to all to believe a group, also if is a virtual chess group, but made from real people.... Enjoy yourself to do relaxing chess games (and to beat men!! ;)) |

| Posted by pebbles nsa-hitachi.com 3/16/2004 10:10:21 play online chess | New rating of teams Message: The new team ranking is based on the Elo system, whereby the difference between *team* ratings is used in the calculation, not the player's individual ratings. In my opinion, this way of ranking teams is quite meaningless. I have looked at the past results of some of the highest ranked teams, and have found that on average the pairings of their matches are highly favorable to them; their win expectancy is therefore also very high and that is the only reason why they are at the top. It is not so that they perform better than could be expected. For any team, whatever the strength of its players, there are two ways to achieve a high rank: 1. to play highly favorable matches (i.e. matches where the ratings of the opposing players are substantially lower than the ratings of the own players) most of the time, and to never play unfavorable matches. 2. to only play higher ranked teams; in such matches, winning 50% of the games in fairly paired matches, guarantees an increase in the team rating. Besides these two methods, there exist certain cheating methods, but they aren't as effective as the (legitimate) above described. For instance, sandbagging is such a method. Or take the example of a captain of a certain team (of which you, zormaster, have been a member some time ago ;-) ), who simply dropped the old account and started with a new account and a much lower Elo... Such 'dirty' tricks aren't very effective in the long run, though. I also welcome the new players in our team; it's been a while since I last did that. |

I am truly sorry for the loss your family has had. I am new to the team and did not have the opportunity to get to know Christina, however I know that she was beautiful girl and great chess player. It is terrible to lose someone so young, I have lost my sister who was that age too. We will remember them forever, but thank God that they were here for a short time at least.
