No problem playing the number 1 team. In our 1st match, I have a win and loss against a 1900 player. In the 2ond match, I have a loss and the possibility of a draw against a 2000 player. Now I am matched a 2200 player and will give it my best.

From the archive, 12 July 1972: Fischer's late opening gambit in Reykjavik — Originally published in the Guardian on 12 July 1972. Boris Spassky and Bobby Fischer finally made it to the world championship chessboard tonight and there was an almost palpable sense of relief throughout the auditorium at the sports stadium here, that chess had at last taken over from the ballyhoo. Yet Fischer was characteristically late. Promptly at 5pm Spassky walked on to the stage accompanied by the West German referee Herr Lothar Schmid, who had raced back to Iceland from his son's car crash in West Germany. Spassky immediately played his opening pawn to Queen four, and the match was underway. Spassky sat for a while and then walked around the board. Five minutes later ...

On Chess: Frequent walks gave Fischer's brain a boost — Many stories concern Bobby Fischer's fondness for walking. On three or four occasions during the 1960s, I met him by chance as he perambulated around New York. He was always friendly and eager to talk. Late-night walks often took him to chess hangouts such as the Chess and Checker Club of New York, where he would frequently take on a player of master strength, offering up to 15-1 odds to his opponent and the gathering kibitzers. He seemed to tremendously enjoy the fun and hilarity provoked by the impromptu exhibitions. A champion boxer once described to me the difficulty of keeping up with Fischer's walking tours. There seems to have been a method to his locomotion. Rae Pica, author of ...

Teenager Cements His Status as the Best in the Netherlands — If there was any doubt about Anish Giri’s status as the Netherlands’ biggest chess star, it was put to bed by his showing in the Dutch national chess championship. He finished two points ahead of his nearest competitor, Ivan Sokolov, in the 10-player field. At 17, Giri is now a two-time Dutch chess champion, and he is ranked No. 40 in the world. In other chess tournament news: The Commonwealth Championship, which has been held semi-regularly since 1983, is an odd totem of Britain’s vanished empire. It has usually been played in India, but the most recent chess event was held in late June and early July in South Africa to coincide with the South African Open. In the 2004 chess tournament, the former ...

Dearth of UK chess tournaments forcing British grandmasters to look overseas — English grandmasters had a memorable few days last weekend, sharing first prizes in the US and South Africa. Such long journeys have become a professional necessity. Apart from the British Chess Championship and the London Classic, there is currently a dearth of major UK chess tournaments, so our best GMs have perforce to be globetrotters. They make a good job of it. England No1 Michael Adams is ranked world No21 but is now rarely invited to elite chess events, so he has made his own niche in strong opens. Adams scored an unbeaten 7/9 in sharing first with US chess champion Gata Kamsky in the World Open at Philadelphia. Kamsky won a speed tie-break, but the pair shared ...

Near-future availability

Message:
I am due in the next week to start a new job in a different location from where I live. It's an extremely long commute so I'll probably be staying nearer there for a while, and therefore won't be able to play as much until the beginning of March (hopefully). It's all I'll probably be able to do to keep from timing out on my current games, so please don't assign me to any new ones until March.

Team play's been OK even when I'm getting slaughtered -- *cough* Poland *cough* and I look forward to when I'll have more time to play some more.

Charging off to China; easing into India — To the amazement of most of my friends, I am off to Asia for the first time in my life. Although I have played chess in 10 countries over the past 25 years - it was limited to Europe and North America. I won't be playing this time around however; I will be a coach of the U.S. team in China and the U.S. Junior players in India. The World Team Championship takes place this year in Ningbo, China, from July 15-27. The chess event is a 10-team, round-robin format (all play all), and the U.S. team is ranked eighth in this prestigious field. I, along with Grandmaster (GM) Var Akobian, will be a coach of the U.S. team as we hope to medal (top-three) against the world's chess elite. The last time ...

Access to games

Message:
I have some access now to the net but soon (April) will start living in a place where I won't have a phone line, so I'm not sure how access is going to work for me.

In March, I should be able to handle a game or two, albeit slowly...access is good during the weekend and I can pay for it during the week...April I'll try to get more access but probably shouldn't handle more than a couple games at a time.

It's rough but I'm getting my life back on track -- was in a bind financially there for quite a while, but things are looking up (now if only I can get a better place...)

I'll get in touch with you all in April to let you know how I'm doing.

Message:
Hi Guys,
Sorry for not responding to the board in a while. I've accepted challenges from everyone. Thanks to everyone who put their efforts into getting the new challenges. I had sent out some challenges prior to that but every time the other team would match us up with players that ranked way higher than us. I seems a little more fair now. I hope everyone has enough games to play. Please let me know if we need to take on more challenges.

Thanks,

Message:
For now, I have as many team games as I want. If anyone wants more games more team challenges, let me know after I get approval from xoticus I will then contact other team captains asking them to challenge us. The advantage of this approach is that xoticus pick the players after seeing the opposing team's assignments and we get more evenly paired games.

Thanks,
Whacker

please do not assign me any more games. I will finish the 5 I have left then i'm going to resign from the team. The reasons are that I just became aware of some cheating by davism, Captain of the invincibles. He admitted it on one of the threads in a forum. The other reason is that there is not enough activity. I have decided to play in the mini tournaments instead. Good bye and good luck to all of you. Of the 8 games I started about 2 months ago, I have finished 4. scoring 0-1-1 vs countdown of Team USA, unfortunately allowing perpetual check in my game as white. and scoring 2-0-0 vs a_professional_idiot of Global Bounty Hunters. I put a lot of effort into these 4 games, and the other 4 I let slide a bit... and it shows, one is lost horribly, one i am up a pawn, the other two i am not getting killed, but not too hopeful of salvaging either of them, hope to get 1 or maybe 1.5 of the 4, for overall 50%. this would be a moral victory, as i would be hanging in there against guys rated 1700 when i think i am probably 1500. countdown i mentioned above is over 1800 uscf, and i am just under 1400. i think the moral of the story is if i play carefully and really plan out for a couple of games i can hand in there but this time control is too fast for me for 8 games starting simultaneously. i have just picked up the two vs shrek of brazilian knights, but should be OK, as opening play is less demanding for a few moves. thanks for listening! good luck to all, markyw.
