♡ 78 ( +1 | -1 ) Ideas for openings/defence ??I've been enjoying my recent games and my rating has been going in the right direction but I'd like to try some completely different openings & defences.
I'm sure my rating will go downhill initially but I'm sure my chess will improve overall.
I currently play the Colle System as white and Caro-Kann against 1. e4 (often turning into a French defence with an exchanged 'bad-bishop'. Against 1. d4 I ussualy play the Slav defence.
I guess a 1. e4 opening would be a good change which one would contrast with the Colle ??? Maybe a more aggressive defence than the Caro-Kann against 1.e4 ??? Against d4 I might play the defence that always scuppers me...but I'll keep that one secret !!
♡ 25 ( +1 | -1 ) From another 1400-1500 playerflooper,
I play London system (d4, Nf3, Bf4) as White. And as you were playing Colle, it is not that much different. As Black, I play Modern Defense (g6, Bg7). Modern is somewhat tricky for both sides, and I had lots of short games both win/loss.
♡ 40 ( +1 | -1 ) it sounds like you are playing a lot of positionally styled chess. You like closed positions, slow attacks, long build ups and so on. If you want something different play the opposite style,. PLay sharp, tactical, and open games to see how the other half lives. Definately consider the open sicilian either side and the scotch game/gambit could be good places to start
♡ 37 ( +1 | -1 ) Positional.... It sounds to me like the Torre Attack as White (1. d4, 2. Nf3, 3.Bg5) would be a good choice: tenacious in attack, solid in defense, flexible yet forgiving! For Black probably a Scheviningen Sicilian vs 1. e4, & vs 1. d4 a Lasker Defense to the Queen's Gambit or a Tartakower Defense.
The book 'Opening Systems for Competetive Chess Players' covers two of these in a very user-friendly format. Check it out!
